    Watermelo crop, what to do?

I'm guessing its not so much of a trap but more of a test. He's probably trying to figure out if you know how to interpret the data your looking at. If you can't there's no real value to the data you collected. If you can give him some advice on how he could improve his crop from what you have then he might hire you to collect more data. The challenge is how do you make data collected by a drone actionable. If you don't know anything about farming you probably can't.

If the card is formatted as a fat32 it has a 4GB file size limit. I’m guesssing that might be what caused that.

    Client and Operator Liability

Lead by example. If licensed operators spend much of their time worried about unlicensed operators then your probably not out there doing commercial operations. Im not advocating for illegal operators, and although we do all we can to operate safely and legally I think the FAA has created a climate where it’s next to impossible to operate profitably. The FAA is making criminals out of most of us. This is nothing new, I was hoping thing would get better with Part107, but it only seems to have gotten worse. I’m a helicopter pilot too, obviously no one wants a midair disaster of any kind, but 107 is a feckless regulation that does very little to mitigate that risk. Even then, I don’t lose any sleep over worrying about it.

    CES 2018 New Drones

    Too little, too late...
  5. Trouble is this industry is dominated by the group think of one major manufacturer who targets anyone who disagrees with their policies. People just want to hear that you buy a drone, take a class, get a license and companies will beat a path to your door. Instant career! If people want to make a career in this industry then they really need to understand the influences shaping regulations, influencing access to capital and marketshare etc.. We don't have to agree on it, but it should be a part of the narrative that is shaping this industry. Unfortunately its crickets. I guess this generation isn't willing to challenge the prerogatives of governments or large corporations in anything other than global warming and the me-to movement, and the older generation just doesn't seem to have the stomach for it.

    Battery Safety

We just purchased four 12,000mAh 6S batteries from Hobbyking. three were fine the forth is pictured. This is brand new out of the box, never plugged into anything. I wonder if it would have popped and when? Things that really make you go hmmm...

    Battery Safety

Yeah, we use Tattu for flying missions but we use the multistar’s mostly for testing. 16k-22k Tattu’s are around $400+ and we need at least two per flight...

That's a great observation but I think much of the pushback in this thread is that you don't need to pay for training to realize the potential that's out there. One question you might want to consider is are consumer drones the right tool. Its not really about the drones, its about methodology. Can you create a workflow that is safe, redundant, repeatable etc., with a consumer drone. That's where lives are saved and value is added. What these types of companies are claiming is that you can accomplish this with consumer drones. I think most people who have experience with this sort of work would tend to disagree. If the cell tower owners believed that drones could provide reliable data and save lives they'd be willing to pay considerably more for the service.

    CES 2018 New Drones

The golden rule in marketing: Never create a demand for something you can’t fulfill.
  12. Last year the Army banned the use of DJI drones which led to considerable confusion int eh other branches of the military. This has been discussed in other threads, I think mostly dismissed as some sort of conspiracy theory. Not that the debate would have changed the outcome of this, but on May 23 the Secretary of Defense suspended the purchase and use of ALL COTS (commercially Off the Shelf) UAS. Not just DJI, not just Chines manufactured drones but ALL commercially available drones! This is the direct result of the irresponsible cybersecurity policies of one company, DJI. Just as with Army ban in August people who own and like DJI will most likely think this doesn't effect them, however, this latest policy is far more reaching than the Army ban. Not only does it encompass all civil COTS drones it will extend to critical infrastructure and federal projects making the commercial market much smaller. Personally I'm interested in this for several reasons, I'm a commercial operator but I'm fascinated how did it came to this? I've also become a fan of Mike Rowe and he explains how the false debate over security and safety is shaping our culture. its unfortunate that ideology or a blind devotion to a brand seems to stifle debate about this. On one hand this makes me sick to my stomach how this is going to effect the commercial market, on the other it isn't going to effect my company the way that is most likely going to effect most of you. A lot of people on this forum ask for advice on how to start or grow a commercial drone company, the first thing I'd say is develop it in a way that enables you to control your own destiny. How can you accomplish that when you have to ask the manufacturer where, and when you can fly?

Thanks, just curious what applications people are trying to make money with. Good luck and let everyone know how it goes.

Why no money? What’s the application of the drones?
  16. Did you damage anything else or anyone else’s property?
  17. For those that can't or won't believe this is real because they haven't see it on the usual drone channels:

I'd like to say that I joined the Army for all of the reasons that people seem to ascribe to our service but the truth is I just needed to change my life and I thought the Army would do that. It certainly did, but not how I thought it would at the time. It wasn't until much later after getting out of the Army that I began to realize how profound the change had been. I'd like to say I meant to do that. I'd like to take credit for all the kind words people write about veterans. But I don't. It was just something I did then. Absolutely loved it, I'd certainly do it again of I had the chance. It provided a lifetime of funny stories. Beside, I got to travel to foreign lands, meet new people and kill them.. I never said the Army gave me a good sense of humor...

Welcome. There really isn’t a one-size-fits-all drone. You need different types and sizes of drones to meet a different mission requirements. People who fly recreationally generally don’t care about this issue, people who fly professionally want tools that can be reconfigured to broaden the utilization. We developed our own system based on open source software that can fly fixed wing, multirotor and single rotor UAV’s. This enables us to pick the right drone for the project all using the same workflow, GCU, and payloads. You should probably check out ArduPilot, in my opinion it’s the right software to use as a base for this sort of methodology. The downside is that it’s mostly DIY based and is terrible at integrating sensors and accessories that professionals care about, and it’s difficult (at best) to trust most of the hardware controllers. Good luck.

Not only can GPS be unreliable it’s not accurate enough for the engineering need of many of our customers.

Where in Texas? I spent the last two years of my time in the Army flying Uh-1’s at Fort hood in the CAP 6th ACCB. Operating drones is nothing like flying a helicopter but I love all things aviation and like you trying to figure out how to use UAV’s to make a difference. Welcome to the forum.

LAANC - is it working for you?

Not only that, its a free webinar and they restrict it to 1000 people, not even a 1000 down sites where you could have many people attending. Obviously they're mostly sold out. Add to that they're taking four months to disseminate probably four hours of information.

So what is your question? You say this: But then say this: Which is it? You either need accurate data or you don't. The drone doesn't care what the data is used for. The more accurate the data the more value the data has.
