  3. Airspace Authorizations - Two Questions

    Thanks to everyone who responded to my post. Here's an update for anyone interested - I submitted my airspace authorization application on June 22 and just today I received the following acknowledgement from the FAA: " . . . Your Airspace application has been received. It will be processed in the order it was received by our office. A reference number has not been assigned to your application yet but once it is entered into our tracking system, you will receive a separate email with that information. It may take a few weeks for the second email to be sent. Airspace Authorization applications take up to 90 days to be processed." To their credit, at least the FAA sent an acknowledgement, which is encouraging. I think these guys are really trying to do the right thing but likely overwhelmed with requests. Stay tuned . . .

  5. Need some help from those of you who have processed, or have in process, a request for airspace authorization. 1) I submitted a request today for airspace authorization. Should I expect to receive any response from the FAA with a tracking number or something else that acknowledges my request is in their system? If so, how soon?? 2) Your opinion please - This was my first request - for authorization to fly near a specific airport. There are other airports in my area for which I would like to request airspace authorization. Should I wait until my first request is approved to apply for the others or may I go ahead and apply for the others right away? Thanks in advance for sharing your expertise!

Okay - sorry for the stupid question here but the warp-stabilized version of your footage looks very good - I am a Final Cut Pro X user and have never heard of a warp stabilizing technique - can you please tell where I can get more information about the use of warp stabilizing? Is it a function that is available in Resolve or Premier Pro, or perhaps a plug in for one of those video editors???

Whenever I'm in doubt about a ordinance like this, I look up the police station having jurisdiction over the specific geography in question, call and tell them that I have been asked to fly a drone commercially in a certain area of their jurisdiction, and ask if there are any restrictions. If you get the answer that there are no restrictions, be sure to note the name and badge number of the officer with whom you spoke. That way, if the cops approach you while you are flying, you can reference the conversation you had with the officer at the station.
  8. My name is Jim Brammer and I am the owner of Soaring Vistas Media Aerial Photography, located in the Los Angeles area. Single biggest challenges, listed in order of priority . . . 1) FAA 333: Petitioned the FAA in mid September, 2015, for my FAA 333 exemption and still waiting for 333 exemption grant. 2) Pilot License: Until the FAA implements a certification process for drone pilots, I either need to get my pilot license or hire pilots. Challenge is finding pilots who want to partner with me. 3) Pricing: Still trying to figure out rates for pricing. Could use some help here - want to set competitive rates but also need to be profitable. Need to be able to pay for equipment, insurance, marketing and, of course, to legally staff a mission, I need to factor in the cost of a licensed Pilot and Visual Observer at a minimum - maybe more staff depending on size and complexity of the mission. 4) Competing against non-333 businesses: I've done some test marketing to real estate agents in my area and found that there are a lot of folks out there without their 333 exemption who are willing to shoot aerial real estate jobs for a lot less than I need to charge to make my business profitable. 5) Customers: Need figure out my target markets and get out and network in the community.   9. Greetings from Los Angeles!

    Greetings! My name is Jim Brammer and I am a professional photographer whose commercial studio business is evolving to embrace aerial photography using UAS. The name of my aerial photography company is Soaring Vistas Media. I have applied for my FAA 333 Exemption in order to fly commercially and look forward to marketing my services for aerial photography. It all started about three years ago when, out of curiosity, I purchased a Parrot AR. Drone. As I taught myself how to fly, I realized the potential of UAS in the photography/cinematography market, especially in my home town of Los Angeles. After purchasing several other "toy" helicopters and quadcopter and putting in a lot of practice flying hours, I decided to jump in deeper and acquired a DJI Phantom 2, on which I mounted a GoPro camera with a 3D gimbal and a video downlink. Following that, I built a DJI F550 - a 550mm class hexicopter - on which I also installed a 3D gimbal and GoPro camera, along with a more sophisticated, robust control system and video downlink. Most recently, I acquired a DJI Phantom 3 Professional. As revenue and business opportunities dictate, I plan to grow into larger UAS platforms that support medium-to-full-sized DSLR and cinematography cameras.
