  15. CAMINO ISLAND, WA--- When a family vacationing on Camano Island saw a crime in progress on Wednesday morning, they first called 911 but then used a drone to chase the thieves.  Christopher Harris and his friend Nick Garlock were hanging out behind his uncle’s house when they heard an engine and looked down to the water and saw two men stealing his uncle’s boat.

The teen ran inside his uncle’s vacation home and returned with his drone.  Garlock tried yelling at the men but they took off, he stayed on the phone with 911 while Harris launched the drone and started recording.

“I was in shock, somebody’s actually stealing our boat... nobody steals boats out here” Harris explained.  “I started chasing them, I was flying about 50 feet above.”

Eventually the boat went out of range but the teens were able to tell Island County Deputies the direction it was heading, it was later recovered near Langley.

Harris says he knows some people have misgivings about drones but he hopes this shows a good way the technology can be used.  “There’s good things and bad things about drones but if you use them properly, then it’s a positive” Harris explained.

Deputies returned the boat to the family who said it certainly made for an interesting end to their trip.  “Definitely not the way I thought I our day was going to go” Garlock said as they enjoyed the sunset.

The pair are visiting from California and never expected big city drama to follow them here.  “I’ve been here so many times and something like this; it doesn’t happen here” Harris said. When a family vacationing on Camano Island saw a crime in progress on Wednesday morning, they first called 911 but then used a drone to chase the thieves.  Christopher Harris and his friend Nick Garlock were hanging out behind his uncles house when they heard an engine and looked down to the water and saw two men stealing his uncles boat. The teen ran inside his uncles vacation home and returned with his drone.  Garlock tried yelling at the men but they took off, he stayed on the phone with 911 while Harris launched the drone and started recording.“I was in shock, somebody’s actually stealing our boat... nobody steals boats out here” Harris explained.  “I started chasing them, I was flying about 50 feet above.”Eventually the boat went out of range but the teens were able to tell Island County Deputies the direction it was heading, it was later recovered near Langley.  Harris says he knows some people have misgivings about drones but he hopes this shows a good way the technology can be used.  “There’s good things and bad things about drones but if you use them properly, then it’s a positive” Harris explained.Deputies returned the boat to the family who said it certainly made for an interesting end to their trip.  “Definitely not the way I thought I our day was going to go” Garlock said as they enjoyed the sunset. The pair are visiting from California and never expected big city drama to follow them here.  “I’ve been here so many times and something like this; it doesn’t happen here” Harris said.
