    Hello!

Hi from the Indy area! I'm new to the group! Just finishing up Drone Pilit Ground School and taking the part 107 exam next week! Thanks to Mike McG for a recent phone chat helping me sort out a few confusing details. Planning to use my Phantom 3 as additional vantage in my photography business.
  2. Ok so as I embark on this new faze of my career I’m very exited to hear all your stories and advice. At 55 years of age this will be my 3rd career, the first one was in aviation and the 2nd was in email marketing design, development and execution. Now it’s my turn to do something I’ve always loved. If all goes well I’ll be a commercial drone pilot by the end of the year!!!

    Hi from Dallas/Ft Worth

I had been looking at drones for a while as a method of taking more interesting photos as wife and I travel in our RV. Did not want to spend a lot, but did a lot of research and got the Hubsan X4 H501S-S last week. Have watched videos on laws, tips for setting it up and charging batteries. Hope to take maiden flight Saturday. Flew RC airplanes for many years, but that a long time ago; flew its Orville and Wilber I think. Have always taken scenery photos and hope this will add a new dimension. Thanks for letting me join.

New member - Hi from SkyWatch.AI

Hi all, My name is Ilan and I'm from SkyWatch.AI , a startup focused on creating a flight safety, risk analysis, and insurance platform. In the past couple of months, we've been running our beta version within our commercial drone pilots test group and two days ago we released our official mobile app in the US, currently available for iOS and Android. We got some amazing feedback from commercial pilots that helped us improve our service and safety solutions. I invite you to try our app and if you have a comment, suggestion, question or any relevant feedback I'd be happy to hear and assist. Get the app here

    Just getting started

Greetings from California! So glad I found this forum. I am new to drones. I take the sUAS airman’s knowledge exam in 3 days. Don’t own a drone yet. Preparing to start a drone based business. Probably start with real estate photography. Interested in mapping . Lots of agriculture locally. From what I have read, will probably start with a Magic Pro. Then add a Phantom 4 Pro after I get started. I have heard that Magic Pro 2 is coming out soon with improved camera and obstacle avoidance. Wondering if I should wait 2-3 months for Magic Pro 2 to be available, or buy what is on the market now? Or for a few hundred bucks more, just buy the Phantom, which already has a superior camera, and probably more suited to mapping? Anybody have experience using Magic Pro for mapping?

    Hello from Chicagoland

Hello all! I just purchased a Parrot Bebop 2 as a starter and am excited to get into the hobby. Unfortunately, I just discovered all the registration requirements and live 2.5 miles from Schaumburg municipal airport. So much for just going out in the back yard or local park to fly my new "toy". Anyone have any experiences with the small airports and flying? How much hassle am I going to get? Thanks!!

    Drone autopilot

Hello guys. I’m currently trying to build my first uav. It’s a quadcopter & its primary flight mode will be autopilot using a Pixhawk. Any tips, info or links anyone can provide that can help me would be much appreciated. One big question I have is if it would be possible to have the quadcopter go to a destination and land and then return to home. I also have an Arduino Uno that I intend to use in tandem with the Pixhawk. Thanks folks

    Hello from San Diego, CA

Hello all! My name is Darren, and I recently obtained my Part 107 here in San Diego, CA. Its a pretty heavily utilized airspace location, unfortunately. I own a DJI Mavic Pro that I am starting to figure out. I look to develop my own aerial video company, and any advice or tips that anyone has in starting your own aerial video business I'd greatly appreciate it! Happy flying! - Darren
  10. Hi there, I recently read some articles about UAVs being used for the purpose of structural inspections of offshore oil platforms and the cargo tanks of ships. Having worked operationally in the maritime industry for the last 16 years, in both the offshore energy and merchant sectors, I was wondering if I can help any UAV professionals get started in these markets. There is definitely lot of room for UAV service and product development in the maritime industry, so depending on your needs, I can help you understand the maritime industry better and identify local opportunities wherever you are in the world. If you are interested in developing new UAV related software and hardware, which may engage, entertain or help improve the safety and welfare of sea-goers, I would be happy to provide input and give advise. Just let me know! All the best Thom

No idea what I am doing...

Hello all, I am a new Engineering teacher in Indiana and I have been reading articles about schools in Canada that have K-12 drone programs. I have never thought about a drone club but now I have a couple of students interested in starting one. Would anyone be willing to share any K-12 curriculum, ideas, or learning objectives that could be taught in a drone club? Thanks so much!

    New Introduction

Hello everyone, My name is James H. I reside in FL and I just registered and new to this group/site. I am here to learn more about the drone industry and geospatial advances and technology. I do have a B.A. in Geography and have worked in the industry for about 1.5 years of some geospatial experience. I worked for a small geospatial company as a sensor operator collecting aerial imagery on a flight crew and have processed data and maps as a GIS technician before working in the IT field now. However, I am currently not working in the industry ,but I do love what I studied in school and the opportunity to keep this going as a side hobby at minimum. I also enjoy learning about our earth and mapping and surveying targets from above. I would love to get to know many of you all in the industry and those who are hobbyists. I only have a little nano drone for now but would like to upgrade soon when finances are available. I am also interested in getting the drone license as well. Hope to meet and engage with you all soon. I am thankful to be among you great professionals and enthusiasts. Thank you, James H.

    Next Generation Drones

Hi all, I have recently started a new job with a company that is producing the next generation of drones. Without giving too much away, our drones will significantly increase the flight time, distance and payload capabilities that that restrict existing drones. Our drones will also be able to withstand greater environmental conditions i.e. higher wind and heavier rainfall. As with existing drones, our next generation drone can be used in a multitude of markets from sports, film & entertainment recording, commercial, search & rescue, Inspection, emergency response, Oil & Gas, renewable energy, delivery companies etc. I would like to hear from anyone that has came across operations that have been restricted by current drone limitations or who may have an application that our technological advances would be advantageous. Regards Chris

    Hello 2 you all

Dear UAV people, I read an introduction is much appreciated so here I go..I'll try to keep it short;-) I'm considereing buying an Phantom 4 in a few weeks.. I am someone that tries to get back in his old skill- and toolset and I am currently looking for work. I graduated as a Multimedia designer a long time ago.. (but in this galaxy). I worked as a 3D modeler on computer games, virtual reality- and video presentations and once in a while I still work on filmfestival shorts as a volunteer doing FX, titles, illustrations..animations. At some point it was necesary to adapt to the situation and I got into software testing and skilled support. But because the IT sector, where I worked in the last couple of years, makes me die from the inside out I am currently persuing the wish to make coorporate video productions with VR and 360 initiatives on the side. I am someone with ideas and I need to place my creativity somewhere. There are some plans on the drawing board to create a decent portfolio where I can show-off beautifull shot edits and 360 applications to get my first paying customer The first few will have te be done for free :-S. I am well aware of the potential of the chosen equipment and the potential and prices of the more professional stuff.. this is something for later or rent. I need to start very modest with a DSLR, a Phantom4 and a Gear 360. I have some good network connections around me in the field (I will definately need a sound guy) so I hope these ingredients and my 300% motivation can make this all work. The alternative is save money but certain death..(No offence, I'm just not an IT man). Are there any like minded souls around here..maybe with some experience on the choices that are up ahead? And considering a small start budget I wonder if my assumption about the P4's possabilities to deliver semi pro footage is correct? Thnx and Regards, Vincent

Just joined. I am a retired surveyor interested in the use of drones for the inspection of high buildings and structures; also in connection with ground survey. Looking to learn and welcoming tips and advice Waiting for delivery of a Hubsan 502S
  19. Hi, I'm very new to this drone scene but very intrigued and plan to buy one sooner than later. The question is, what to buy, especially as a new drone operator? Should I expect a lot of crashes and just buy a junk one first? Or get what seems like the best fit for me and just go for it and don't crash ; ). Maybe I'm expecting a harder learning curve than it will be. Seems like you have to buy before you can try and fly one, i.e. no test flying product available it seems. On product; I've seen the Phantoms and the Inspire both from dji. A cinematographer I met recently was the one encouraging to try this venture and possible work with her so she was pushing the Inspire, which after looking at it I see it can use two controllers one to fly and one to shoot, so I can see it would be advantageous for cinematography with a crew. But I'm sure there are probably many great options that would work for me. Im not sure of my future usage but I would want to use it for commercial purposes once I get established. So those of you using them for commercial purposes or intending too.....what features have you have you found the most useful or features that are not big deal. Do you find the wider angle cameras benefit most shoot styles or something not as wide? I am not familiar enough to know how loud most of these drones are but I'm thinking flying too close and low with wider angle lens would be annoying. Thoughts? And how challenging was it for most of you learning to control these without damaging them? Or are most of these strong enough to handle a little learning curve? Thanks for any input!

    Looking To Buy My First

I'm a retired from the fire service and want to take up drones as a hobby. I'm a private pilot and think this would be a fun passion. Here is my issue: I would like to find a unit that flies for 10 minutes or more, has a live camera, GPS nice, has a return home function. I have never flown a drone before, but I could see myself helping real estate agents and taking some fun pictures. I don't want to get an expensive drone and loose or wreck it and I don't want dirt cheap. I would like to spend from $100 to $300 with a controller. I use a Samsung Android phone. A few choices to review would be appreciated. Thank you for your suggestions!
