Large drones

Recommended Posts

I am an 18,000 hour helicopter pilot. Many of the things we do, I see being done by drones in the future. Such as moving Christmas Trees, river surveys etc...  so I have been looking to see if there is a company that builds drones that have a payload of 300 to 1000 pounds for the lift work. Also one that could autonomously survey a river taking video footage along the way. I would attempt to build my own if I can find a supplier of parts.

That’s interesting. I’m sure you meant not be able to operate under part 107. There seems to be no FAR for drones over 55 lbs. I’ll have to check into that. I may just have to operate under part 133. Thanks for pointing that out. I thought maybe I would just need a waiver.

The only people operating something in that weight class are those with a 333. 107 caps at 55 pounds.

The 55lb weight limit can be exceeded if the unit is inspected and certified as safe for operations and the operator demonstrates their ability.  Currently the only "authority" providing such inspections is, of all things, the AMA via their giant scale airframe inspection and approval program.
