Hello from Jacksonville, FL

Hello,

  My name is Ray and I'm a retired Avionics Technician Chief (U.S. Navy-ret).  I currently work in the avionics field in Jacksonville, FL.  I started flying my UAV last month and I'm getting the hang of flying it!  My short term goals include getting better at flying and honing my videography skills (I am thinking of building my own brushless gimbal assembly).  My long term goal is to start my own videography business.  I am very interested in seeing where the FAA goes as far as licensing for UAV piloting.  Hopefully, they can pass the NPRM that is currently under review.  I am stoked about being a part of this community!

Hey Chief, former DS1 here. I just joined myself and am in the Mandarin area. I'm trying to see if this is viable myself. I'll be home all of March. If you're up for maybe exchanging ideas, I'm all for it.

Respectfully,

Joe

Hi Joe, good to see there are folks here from the J-Ville area.  I am still in the flight training phase of my UAV career and I am getting pretty good at willing the UAV where I want it to go, so I guess that's a start!  I currently fly a JJRC H8D (no auto-ANYTHING) so I feel it's a good platform to get started on.  I am curious about a few things though.  Are you currently flying and if so, where are you doing that?  I am looking for a good area to fly in not too far from Orange Park.  I have reviewed the B4UFLY app from the FAA as to the places that are restricted and as I thought, anywhere near NAS Jax is out of the question, as well as near all the other airports (Cecil, JIA, Herlong Field and Craig Muni...).  Also, what UAV do you fly?  I am already looking to make an upgrade within the next few months and I have been seeing ALOT of reviews on here as well as everywhere else.  LOTS of info and comparisons out there!  Alan has really done the UAV community a great service by providing this forum to share the information.  Thanks Alan!  Lastly, what are your aspirations?  Looking to do this as a hobby, or get a business started?  I am eventually looking to start an aerial videography/photography business in the future.  I look forward to hearing back from you.

@Ray G,

Hey Ray, I just now finally got home from a rotation at my day job and purchased a U818A HD+ and am starting to experiment with it in the back yard. Luckily, I have almost 2 acres to play in and am not in the no fly zone. These batteries go quickly, though. I'll post more when I have time...the honey do list is very long since I've been gone for 46 days. We'll chat again soon. I'll  try to send you a private message this evening.

Respectfully,

Joe
