First time having an account on any forum, First post, first time drone owner, not a first time crasher

Recommended Posts

I am brand new to the drone scene. I did some reading and of course looked on Youtube. I first purchased a Holy Stone toy drone and practiced (still practicing with it), then was given a HS110D  for Christmas and crashed twice (no damage), took some footage and some in flight pics. I practice with the both in a large room where I work. I have since purchased a Mavic Mini. But am still watching videos on it (still have not flown it yet).

I work at Carter Caves State Resort Park (CCSRP), located in Carter County KY. I am currently Interim Program Services Leader (hope it becomes permanent). CCSRP has a Facebook page if  anyone wants to take a look. We post pics of the park and of the caves. If you see "CCM" that would stand for Captain Cave Man (an old cartoon character I used to watch as a kid), I use the character name for fun, but also as a way to  connect  with page visitors. If they come to the park for a visit and ask for CCM that would be really cool as well as serving its purpose. I am working on getting permission to fly for the park, not charging but using the drone to promote our park as well as the community. It is proving to be challenging.

I also do work as a part time EMT for Carter Co. EMS.

I want to learn to fly, for commercial purposes, emergency situations (flood, trail, other), and what ever other opportunities present themselves. I had the idea of trying to have a drone group at the park, with future hopes of have a meet up or convention type. We have a golf course that is only used as walking path now. But from what I am having to do for myself to fly and the information required, the state of KY department of parks, is very strict. So, I have my doubts on starting the just mentioned.

I have started an account with the FAA, I have downloaded the B4UFLY app, and continue to read and watch videos on how to be a safe, professional piolet. I am going to look for a maintenance log sheet, and begin a binder of where and when I fly. I have read a little on LAANCE. So much info for new people.

I also purchased a light for my drones for night flying. It seems the best time to fly is at dusk, when there is no wind.

If I could get some advice/do's/dont's and how this forum work that would be a help. I still extremely new at this, but am excited at the possible; people I could meet, the places I could fly, and yes maybe make some money as well.

Everyone be safe,

Wesley aka CCM

Hi Captain and welcome to the forum.

Carter Caves looks like a great place to be. I would love to photograph a place like that.   If you have pictures or videos you’d like to share there’s quite a few photographers and videographers on this site.  It doesn’t have to be all about aerial.

UAV Coach s a good “beginner” forum.  Easy to navigate, people are friendly, the activity is,  not sure of a politically correct way to put this, pretty slow which makes it nice to strike up interesting conversations.  I’m guessing our members skew a little older, so the conversations are generally about more than just the drone.

Enjoy, feel free to ask questions and share your interest in UAVs.

Thank you for the reply, it was helpful,  and appreciate the info. I have all sorts of nice pics of the park. Will post them soon. I am some time off at the beginning of the week, going to check out the site some more. I am working with the County Extension Agent to set a photography cave tour. The tour will only be open to people with quality photography equipment not just a phone. I can take people places in the caves that only people on the crawling tours get to see. There are some amazing things to see on the " off " beaten path. We are still working out some details. But, hopefully it will turn into a regular tour.

I will have plenty of questions. It will take some time to become more familiar with the site.

I also have since purchased a Mavic Mini. But not flown it yet, due to my wanting to educate myself first. Watching all sorts of videos.

Thanks again, appreciate the info and the encouragement.

Wesley (CCM)

Welcome, Wesley!

Now you've got me interested in visiting Carter Caves :). Also, thanks for your service as an EMT.

Your intended use of drones in the park is interesting and has a lot of potential benefit.  I think you'll like that Mini.  I have one as well and use it as a tactical (backpack carry) drone in Search and Rescue.

Good luck!!

Hi @wesley

Welcome to the UAV Coach Community Forum! Carter Caves State Resort Park looks like an incredible place. We do have an aerial photography thread where you can post your drone pictures.

You can find that here: https://community.uavcoach.com/forum/28-aerial-photography/

Please feel free to ask us any questions!

Hey, thank you for the site to post. I apologize for taking so long to get back. I hope to be able to fly on the park in Feb. There is so much to learn. Especially when it comes to FAA and KY State Parks.

Have a great week,

Wesley
